MudBall Newsletter - Walker Simas

Drinking:

I saw a variety of wild beverages from your DERT this week including cucumber- mentioned more than I ever thought or hoped possible. Well, my Friday evening was brought to you by Big Grape. Wine bars with the right crowd are really fun.

As for daily operation, water, a coconut water whenever I can get my hands on one, smoothies, and of course my GoodWalk Coffee.

You can get yours for 20% off by using code: THETIE for 20% off!

Order the MudBall Half Caff here!

Don’t forget to hydrate!

Eating:

Had Tacos 3x this week and after a good deal of thought, it might be the most quintessential form of sustenance on the planet. The range of flavor and texture, the way the ingredients are prepped, stored, served, and eaten is perfect. Easily you could present four tacos a meal for three meals, and make twelve very different but enjoyable tacos. You could eat them standing up or sitting down, in a nice restaurant or on a street corner with a missing shoe. Can you do that with pizza? Burgers? Kebab’s? Skewers? Noodle dishes? Soups? OK maybe bowls….. but that is for another day.

Tight race on the Solheim Cup Tie Guys Saturday night cookoff! HS just got me with that Paella, which deserved the nod from you guys. We’ll get 'em next time.

Reading:

Continuing along through Exodus via audio each morning with an emphasis on daily listening and notetaking in the evenings. The writing forces me to keep thinking about the text throughout the day. Where Genesis was about creation and choices, Exodus is about liberation, freedom (or lack of freedom), faith, law, and redemption.

For fun, I read some of Harvey Penick’s “If you Play Golf, You’re my friend”. A native ATX man… I love how his chapters are so short. I read this laughably short chapter called “Wasting Your Time”, which had only one sentence. I thought it resonated on so many levels. All he said was:

“Unless you have a reasonably good grip and stance, anything you read about the golf swing is useless”

Thinking:

  • I’ve got beef with apple podcasts.

    • Each time I go to tag old episodes with guests, I am forced to load 10 episodes at a time to [CTL, F] the episode I’m looking to tag. No search bar. Huge shoutout to Spotify, who gets the details right. As a Steve Jobs fan, I know he’d be rolling in his grave.

  • US Team pairings are so obvious, except Brooks and Harman

    • Game wise, they do make so much sense together

    • But from a personality standpoint, its an outlier

    • But I forget they probably have known eachother forever.

    • Florida Georgia Boys. Two years apart in age.

  • Been messing around with some AI Art (Dream and DALL-E 2)

    • It’s ~cool~ now. In 5 years it will be insane.

    • In 10, forget about it.

Culture:

I don’t have much to say here other than I love playing golf. I love that I can play poorly and still very genuinely enjoy being out there. I also miss pressure and love executing difficult shots in the moment. I miss having golf be the vehicle that would force me to be in the present moment so often. The last few years I’ve played less than ever and learned more than ever about the game. It’s time to get back out firing.

Competition:

What a finisher to the Solheim Cup! The Spaniard, Carlota Ciganda- undefeated all week, clinching the final full point for Europe was pretty special. Our thoughts and prayers to Lexi- we do not give chipping advice, or criticism.

Architecture:

Sea Island’s Ocean Forest is of particular interest at the moment. It’s been one of the more underrated sites for quite some time, waiting for an architectural facelift, agronomy withstanding (conditions are immaculate). Beau Welling & team are doing the work.

Guest Check In:

Of all the Tie Offsite trips I want to take, leader in the clubhouse is Purcell Golf. Trevor Dormer’s work at home makes me want to find my passport.
