MudBall Newsletter - Henry Shimp

Here we go again. We’ll be here every week!

Drinking: With a Ryder Cup across the pond (more on that later, F***) it was a big, and I mean big coffee week. The alarm went off at 4AM each morning to get to watching and the coffee, Goodwalk Coffee, was the not far behind. Despite the outcome, I can’t complain about this action.

Eating: I’ve always loved a big filet of Salmon but it had been too long. That will get my dish of the week. Crispy skin, not quite done in the center, nice fat content. Gotta get those Omega 3’s in, so I hear. The other consistency would be more breakfast vehicles. Oatmeal, english muffins, tortillas, and sourdough were this week’s modes of transportation.

Reading: finally am wrapping up An Awakening at Sleepy Hollow (cool but excessive title). Tons of great photo, no shoutout to the photographer, and a real masterclass in templates, the different architects who have left their thumbprint on the place (you like that one? Shoutout Gil and the 16th at Sleepy), and of course the importance of a membership with respect for a golf course’s history and it’s significance. To have a CB MacDonald gem and not have it play the way he intended is a crime. There are other similar places out there that could take this same mindset.

Thinking: I’ll be honest, I’ve been thinking about the business of golf, a good bit about golf course architecture, making a few changes to my club setup, things of that nature. What I have not been thinking about is playing golf. Maybe I went a little hard this summer, maybe it’s just the fact that it’s about to cool down a bit, but I just haven’t had golf on the dome quite as much, at least in terms of playing it myself. I’ve always been this way. When I’m focused on my game, it takes up all the space in my dome. When I’m not, I don’t spend much mental energy on it.

Culture: I’ve had a handful of listeners that I’ve met in person lately pour out what it is they love about the game to me which has been neat. It’s the reason we do this and substantiates our efforts (what efforts?). If you have a story to tell or thoughts to share. Hit us up. We’re more than here for it.

Competition: Well, another Ryder Cup in the books and another one that just wasn’t even close. In the last 4 homes matches, The European and US teams hold 18 and 20 point cumulative margins, respectively. Can we please heat up the discussions on how to make this closer? Like pretty please. It’s so fun to watch even though it’s not even close. Just imagine if it was…

Architecture: The bets thing I can share on this front is my scheming for next year has commenced. That’s scheming for what new courses I will have the pleasure to experience next year. Anywhere that it gets cold is already more or less of the menu for the next 6 weeks or so and therefore other than maybe one trip to the west coast, my 2023 golf travels are in the past tense. So, naturally, we look to 2024! Fired up to get back out #inthewild.

Guest Check In: a bit random here, but a guy who I’ve been thinking about a bit is our guy @Starvinmarvinjr who continues to bring the #content HEAT. You guys have been enjoying the Tie Guys Cook offs as of late. If you like some good old food content from golf guys and you haven’t given Marvin’s (just not his actual name FTR) content a run, make a change there. And check out The episode we did with him as well.

Schedule this week:

Monday: MBM: Ryder Cup Takes, Reactions, Post Game Report

Wednesday: Dr. Professor Walker Simas Strokes (the keys) on a long form piece

Thursday: Interview. TBD on what we bring you fine folk.

That’ll do it!

Cheers,

Henry
