MudBall Newsletter - Walker Simas

A brief, somber moment in remembrance of 9/11- may we never forget. May we, as people, never surrender our life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness.

Drinking:

Super simple lineup here. Water, GoodWalk’s Breakfast Ball Colombia Medium Roast (these days with a pad of unsalted butter, drip of hq maple syrup, & a kiss of cinnamon), a few smoothies, and I’m writing this with tea. By supporting goodwalkcoffee.com, you support The Tie Podcast- discount code listed every MBM.

Eating:

Nice contrast this week between in-house fixin’s and food out & about. In house prep was greek yogurt (sponsored by Big Blueb) with the same additions as my coffee’s (sans butter). Lunches were standard rice, protein, salsa- with some cosmic crisp apples for fiber. Dinners were all about the veg this week. I still believe someone who can cook a wide variety of vegetables well can cook anything well. Couple of pub subs to keep it real, some tacos on friday, all good in the hood.

Reading:

Arguably well overdue, I will be “reading” (actually listening) to the Bible cover to cover through the end of the year. How wrong would it be to go to S3: E6 of Breaking Bad, then jump around again? I’m a slow reader, and a note taker, so I’m excited to whiz through this to see the Bible from a different perspective.

Thinking:

Theme of the week has been application. It’s so easy to read or take in good advice for us, but what good is it if not implemented? A book I picked through again a few weeks ago called The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry has me focused on restructuring what the Sabbath was truly meant for, and how I can make room for those practices. The second has been forcing myself to operate in shorter blocks of time. This is a direct challenge against my work habits and personality, and has been great for me. I don’t see this exercise coming to a close anytime soon

Culture:

For those of you reading this having missed MudBallMonday, today’s episode covered the different vibes between the US Amateur and the US Mid Amateur- golf courses too, but mostly cultural differences.

Competition:

In true Rory fashion- well back after day 1 at the Irish Open- fights back to have a real chance at the trophy, then closed with a four-waterball 74. Scottie and Rory could have given the golf world nothing else to talk about this year had some things gone their way. Excited for the Ryder Cup, eager to see the golf course!

Architecture:

Thank you for all of the nice messages about the Old Barnwell piece! It is hard to comprehend how much knowledge a Bill Coore might have after viewing so many sites around the world, seeing them evolve from start to finish- then develop over many years. I can’t imagine what emotions are involved in being tied to so many beautiful acres where people have little but good memories.

Guest Check-In:

Trevor Dormer- Canadian Architect & Shaper & guest at The Tie is here with some updates on some recent Coore & Crenshaw projects. Pt. Hardy Golf Club (opening) and Torch Cay (begin construction) updates below:

“Point Hardy is both stunningly beautiful and brutally intimidating. It’s the beauty and the beast. It will be a highly emotional golf course, and I stand behind that statement. When you get to know her you will have a lot of fun.”

“It’s been 8+ years since Ben Cowan Dewer gathered a vision for the property [Pt. Hardy], and 3+ years of construction mayhem, so now to be working on the final details is bittersweet. The grand opening in December will be a memorable day for many of us!”

“Torch Cay is another dream project. Bill and Ben have routed some amazing golf holes along the coast of a private island in the Bahamas. It’s still early, but I can tell you we’ve got a great construction team in place and the land will produce a noteworthy golf course.”

Have a great week, we’ll be knocking down your door with more content in just a moment!

Cheers,

WS
