MudBall Newsletter - Walker Simas

What a weekend out at The Ringer in New Holland at The Tree Farm. Zac Blair brought together so many talented and special people to create what we got to experience last weekend. What a treat getting to spend time with some of you out there. As much as I love the DM’s, in-person is as good as it gets.

Drinking

Dozens of Gatorades (I’m a yellow guy), electrolyte powders, tequila beverages, 33 degree Modelos, and some quality coffee at some local shops kept me rolling along through the SC heat. We got cooked, but that's ok.

Eating

Two highlights this week---- The first is obligatory, and i’m regretful to have forgotten the name of the name of the BBQ that was catered at the event. On Saturday, resident artist and Tie Podcast guest Dave Baysden told me after I finished my round “man you gotta go for those beans- they don’t look good but man they taste good” and boy was he right. Ribs on Sunday were fantastic. A small nudge to get the meat off the bone, but with one bite, it gave way, and the rest is history.

Secondly, our host for the week, BDraddy’s Lee Norwood scoped a french bakery in Aiken for breakfast Sunday morning. Coffee and pastries were aces, and that side salad had a vinaigrette that knocked my socks off.

Reading

I read a book on the way up called 10% Happier by: Dan Harris. The theme was meditation through the eyes of a former ABC News anchor. I’d recommend it to anyone who is skeptical of meditation, especially from a religious or spiritual front. Dan and I seem to share the view that it’s simply a tool that is reliable and will not take away all your problems. It will, however, help you process them with a clearer, less emotional mind.

Thinking

Thankful for our community. Loved getting to meet some humans I’ve only known through social media accounts. It makes me excited for the future.

Culture

I’ve never played in any of EAL’s Random Golf Club events, and I’m not sure how many other places you can walk up a fairway with 80 guys, but that was enough to fill my cup for quite a while.

Competition

So much here. David Kocher shot 59 yesterday afternoon on the KFT- great guy and a player who had to fight every step of the way. I’d be a happy guy to see him on TOUR for a long long time.

I sincerely regret any shitty takes on Hovland’s golf game, especially chipping. He’s put on a show this year, and beat out some big time players who are having great years. Fun to watch.

Excited for the Walker Cup- especially for friend of the program Barclay Brown, and of course Team USA. Two cracks at The Old Course in two years- I’ll take it.

Architecture

I got to spin around Old Barnwell with past guest and good friend from home Gray Carlton, who built a lot of the features out there. He took me through all 18 and shared some in-depth stuff about the construction process. I love some of the ingenuity that Brian Shneider and Blake Conant have come up with out there. More to come in a future newsletter.

Guest Check-In

Trevor Dormer’s work at Purcell is coming along nicely. BC is so beautiful and I look forward to getting up there to experience it for myself. I’m craving the fresh air already.

This Week’s Menu

Monday: No MBM (sincere apologies- both tie guys had wild logistics this weekend, and if we’re going to do episode 100, we’re gonna do it right)

Wednesday: Henry is on the keys for our long form Newsletter.

Thursday 8pm ET: UNC Men's Head Golf Coach Andrew DiBitetto joins HS

Cheers,

WS
