Sleeping:
Sleeping is an odd thing to discuss on a podcast & we know that. For something we do so often, we think it’s worthy of a monthly update, an accountability check, or a shift in focus.
July and August have been an absolute bullet train. I eat like I sleep- well & when I can.
Physical goals are the most functional thing to get me to bed on time, and the mental clarity is a byproduct of the sleep. It’s a positive feedback loop i’m fond of but haven't perfected.
Eating:
Lots of buffets- ready for some home cooked meals
Jimmy John’s shredduce is the best in the world. Icy, crispy almost, cold, crunchy. Really gets me going.
Pickled (hot) peppers are amazing and can be included on *almost any sandwich.
I put a serious dent in the resort (complinentary) chocolate chip cookie inventory this weekend. Somewhere between 15 and two thousand?
Learning:
Harnessing creativity is reps like anything else.
When I’m starved of creativity it's because I'm not engaging in the act.
Putting off creativity is not like having a clogged sink. With that, you have to deal with it every morning and evening.
Creativity is an invisible investment account that only allows you to access the funds at random times. If you seldom deposit money, your surprise will be minimal. If you deposit often, what you find could be disappointing, reasonable, or substantial.
We intercept ideas like we would a silent phone with no contacts and history. If you miss the call, it’s gone. If you get it, you still have no idea who’s on the other line.
There are so many debits. The credits, when they come, are powerful and hard to mistake.
Fitness:
I run my second race in December. The first was a half-marathon, this one a full. In the lull, weight training has been the primary focus with some yoga and running thrown in for good measure.
In the transition to more mileage, I am so thankful for the gym. I have enjoyed the fresh legs.
Culture:
I hung out with a bunch of golf course superintendents this weekend at Sailfish Point in Stuart, FL. Past guest Kyle Harris (previous sup at Steamsong Resort) joined us.
Without a sliver of a doubt, each time I play with a superintendent I learn something new and interesting about turf, course maintenance, or the golf industry.
The amount of effort and experience that goes into (outstanding) maintenance is probably far beyond what 99% of golfers can notice when playing a round.
Competition:
Well, go follow Henry and some friends of The Tie at the 123rd U.S. Amateur Championship at Cherry Hills. I’d highly recommend it. It’s going to be saucy out there.
Architecture:
Going further on Cherry, it really is amazing how similar the course is today to William Flynn’s original drawings.
I love how the reason for the establishment was a place for just golf
Flynn was paid $4,500 for his design- equivalent to $80k today.
Doak’s consulting work out there is so non-invasive. In the best way, it feels like a walk in the park. Despite that, it certainly will not be this week.
This Week’s Menu:
