Mudball Newsletter- Henry Shimp

Happy September everyone! A month that holds many wonderful things-college football returns, great weather, The Walker and Ryder Cups-and some scary forces such as the end of summer all the same.  We have the #content coming in droves so be ready for it. Let’s get after this week’s mudball newsletter. Before I forget… This content is literally, as I type this, brought to you by our friends at Goodwill Coffee and Our Blend the Mudball Half Caff. Use code THETIE for a discount on anything on their site.

Drinking: Have to give a shoutout to Kombucha this week. I can’t quite shake a little cold that has been on me for a few weeks with a good bit of time on airplanes which has led me to get plenty of water and probiotics in. Not much for the medicinal route, I prefer to keep it more natural, and that’s what Kombucha is for me.

Eating: I have a take for you all. Who would’ve guessed. A high quality pork chop is THE most under rated piece of meat in the game. (what game?)  Twice in the month of August I have had pork chops that have just knocked my socks off and the real magic of a pork chop is it is about a third of the cost of a high quality cut of beef. And that’s not even considering Wagyu or truly premium beef. Listen, I love a good steak, but really good pork beats it by a mile in the combination of taste and value. Eat some pork!

Reading: One of my favorite books of all time is Red Notice by Bill Browder. A story about Russian high finance, humanitarianism, and exposes the amazing corruption still present in the country today. I was recently made aware that Browder has released a follow up called Freezing Order which I promptly ordered. Keeping with my “rereading my favorites” kick and to prepare for Freezing Order, I’m going to go back through Red Notice this week. I recommend you read it if you haven’t. It’s really fantastic.

Thinking: With my fearless, foolish, favorite cohost Dr. Professor Walker Simas diving into the video game recently, the pod duties will be heavy on my end this fall. Hopefully that is decent news. (?) So, I’ve been thinking hard about guests, series, themes, and all the rest on really putting out some great content heading into the back end of the year. If YOU have been THINKING about anyone you’d like to hear at The Tie… Come on, you know the drill.

Culture: for reasons that hopefully mean something in a week’s time or so, I chose to not attend the Walker Cup this year with a few friends and family members and wow is that hurting at the moment. Seeing so many people posting from St. Andrews about the action as well as just the depth of golf culture that is omnipresent in Scotland in general has me truly feeling the worst effects of social media this week #FOMO.

Competition: people have been asking for them, so here are my quick thoughts on Corn Man’s Ryder Cup selections. One, he probably picked as solid of a team as he could have. I think team chemistry was clearly a top priority and it looks as if that will be in a great spot. Two, I think it kind of bites that this team has become brutally hard to truly “play your way onto.” Lucas Glover and Keegan made compelling cases to get a slot but from the lens of chemistry and long term outlook on the roster just didn’t make a ton of sense. I’m not necessarily in opposition to this; however, I do think it’s unfortunate that those guys in likely their last bids to get a slot never really had much of shot. Finally, coming back the other way, in business, sports, life, anything, you have to want people who truly want to #bethere, and while I was as much of a naysayer as anyone on JT making the team and remain even a bit skeptical on Burns, those guys desperately want to be there and likely will be for many years so to give them a vote of confidence when they needed it is probably a good thing for the US Ryder Cup team not just this year, but in the future. Just one guy’s thoughts.

Architecture: I’ll keep this short and sweet. Tie Course Reviews will be back this week a discussion on over/under/properly rated golf courses. The smoke is coming and the takes are hot. Be ready. Be there. Wednesday at midnight ET(Eastern Time, not Extra Terrestrial).

Guest Check In: Proud, elated, and relieved are all words that come to mind for when I saw previous guest at The Tie Andrea Lee get the nod for the Solheim Cup. Making the US Solheim Cup team is not easy and so make it in her first 5 years on tour is just truly wonderful. So pumped to see Andrea peg it. If you haven’t heard the pods we’ve done with her, slap the links Here and Here to get to know her better and look out for a round 3 after the Solheim Cup concludes.

That’s it for this week friends. Weekly schedule below.

Peace be the journey,

HS
