MudBall Newsletter - Henry Shimp

Ok friends, we back for another #MUDBALL newsletter. Let’s first rock and then roll!

Drinking: So, the hitters over at Top Chico have come out with these flavored deals (not spiked) and naturally I had to try one Big Blueberry was the flavor of course. Good shit. Very Spindriftesque, but better than Spindrift. Spindrift is hit or miss. Topo is hit or hammer. I’d say this was hammer. Speaking of hammer. If you haven’t already go HAMMER that link for our friends at goodwalkcoffee.com and get in the game. Anything you like. Use code THETIE at checkout for 20% off. They have it all. Nothing big blueberry oriented… yet.

Eating: Made a Cacio e Pepe Gnocchi with salmon on the side this past friday and my god was it good and stupidly easy. Quick directions: boil gnocchi for 60-90 seconds in salted water. 10g of butter in the pan. Gnocchi in the butter once butter is browning. About half cup of pasta water in the pan. Once a little bit of that has cooked off (about 3 min) go in with 30g Parmesan and an irresponsible amount of pepper. Stir and cook until thickened and coating gnocchi (2 mins). Serve and sprinkle more parm and pepper. 15 mins tops in and out. You won’t regret it.

Reading: Geoff Dyer has a wonderful recount of the end of Roger Federer’s career that I have been thoroughly enjoying. One of the things he does in this book that you don’t always see is he contextualizes the late stages of Fed’s career within the time it is taking place which provides time stamps for when it is happening. It’s easy to just remember things in a vacuum. I appreciate that this book doesn’t allow that to happen.

Thinking: I’ve had effort in my dome recently. This applies to golf, work, friendships, anything. Why do we sometimes take time away from other aspects of life to show up to something and then not put our full attention and effort towards it? Why go take 5 hours away from your weekend to play golf only to get the to the 12th hole and start thinking about how you would rather be non the couch watching football already? Do things or don’t. Make minutes count. That’s what I’ve been thinking about lately.

Culture: I hope everyone is enjoying the fall weather, football, and of course golf. This week’s MBM is on exactly that. Fall Golf and the reasons why it can be golf in its best form and what else comes with playing as the leaves and weather begin to noticeably change. Give it a listen by clicking this link.

Competition: frankly my eyes have been more on the college game than the pro game these days. Lots of great fall events going on and important things to keep tabs on. The connection between the college and pro game has become very apparent so getting your eyes on the stars of today’s college game is becoming more and more interesting. Check out the schedule on golfstat.com and see if there is an interesting event near you.

Architecture: this is a great time of year to start next year’s travel scheming. While travel for golf is beginning to take a back seat to football, family, and your home course, put some of that couch time to use by firing up a little YouTube or god forbid pick up a book to figure out where you want to play next year that you maybe haven’t been before. Many great resources out there. No free ads of course.

Guest Check-In: Doubling up here. UNC Head Golf Coach and 5th year All-American Andrew DiBitetto and Austin Greaser have both been guests at The Tie and not surprisingly , the Tar Heels are living up to the hype this season. With 2 wins already, the Tar Heels are headed across the pond to play in the St. Andrews Links collegiate, a made for TV college event contested on the Jubilee and Old Courses. NOT BAD.

Schedule This Week:

Monday: MBM 106-Fall Ball.

Wednesday: Walker Simas on the Long Form

Thursday: Walker Simas and Casey Bannon of The Golfer’s Journal
