MudBall Newsletter - Henry Shimp
Hello everyone, welcome back to the Mudball(!!!) newsletter. Today it will be me, HS, back on the keys to get your week off to the right start. Let’s. Get. It. Going.
SELF Week:
Sleeping: The sleep game has been ~relatively~ on point. My sleep quality is usually rather high, and my duration is (slightly less) usually high enough. Where I run into trouble is when the circumstances of a day don’t allow me to get in bed until later because I can’t really make it much past 5:30am. If I don’t make it to bed until 11:30 or midnight, I’m just working with a tight window of sleep time. It is what it is.
Eating: tacos have continued to be the theme of this fall. I love them. They love me. I eat breakfast tacos, lunch tacos, tex-mex tacos, real mex tacos, fish tacos, pork tacos, beef tacos, fish tacos, you get the deal. Only thing that doesn’t belong on a taco is queso. I’ll die on that hill. Also, and this is important, I’m (obviously) not a smart man, but I am an observant one. And a recent observation I have made is that the best two workouts I have had in the last month were ~taco induced.~ Few tacos around 9am, give it a little while, drink some Goodwalk Coffee (use code THETIE) and thank me later. Your legs sure won’t.
Learning: I’ve been working on “character development” (will explain) in my life and have been learning how valuable it is to daily success and productivity. Put another way, character development is compartmentalization. Viewing myself as a different character in different settings of my life and keeping boundaries between my different daily activities. For example, when I show up to play golf for 2 hours, I’m not a young private equity guy who is fielding emails on the 4th green. That is a detraction from my presence in being a golfer at that time and makes me worse at both things. Turning that around, when I’m in my office or at home working, I’m a worker, not a golfer, and my full presence and attention goes there. Focus on seeing yourself as being a different character in different settings to be more present and therefore better in each facet of your life.
Fitness: a lot to cover here. Been training hard, eating hard, gaining a few more lbs on the #roadto200 which by the way is purring along. Sitting around 192 or 193 so if I can make it to the Thanksgiving dinner table about 2-3 lbs north of that, it’s a point for the good guys. Conversely, the running game has been calling me back and I’ve established a few goals in the world for next year. That doesn’t mean the iron game takes a hit, it just means more recovery time and more food. Burn hot eat a lot. That’s my motto.
LOS TENETS:
Culture: I have multiple friends and close confidants working on golf course projects at the moment and a big piece of that is dialing in/thinking through how a club will function and be the best version of itself from a vibe/cultural standpoint. These are always fun things to think through and brainstorm with people on. While this sort of stuff usually stays confidential, a highlight from an undisclosed club idea recently was to setup a daily putting course on the practice green for each player of the day to get one run at and throw $10 in the hat. Low man take all. Nothing special, but I haven’t seen it before. I like losing money!
Competition: Want to give a shout to the Ladies game and in particular call out Celine Boutier. I’d be lying if I said I’m closely tracking women’s golf, but I have enough people I track to know what’s going on out there. Celine has ended the last 3 years (20-22) at 57th, 28th, and 12th in the world and this year after her now 4th win of the season, which includes the Evian Championship her first major win, she has climbed as high as 3rd in the world and currently sits 5th. I feel like in women’s golf in particular we see so many swift ascensions and corresponding drops in form but fewer slow rises to the top. Celine is 29, and to see someone in the women’s game make such steady progress through the course of their career is cool. Hats off. Here’s to more success!
Architecture: The Tie Guys (Guys in caps, cuz we’re legit) have been getting out in the wild recently and seeing a lot of new projects, restorations, renovations, etc. Always a blast to get out and here the story of a club, how an architect or developer is thinking about how to improve a place or build it to begin with, and what the goals are for the people who will ultimately play it. The #content has been #captured and we simply await a few projects to push towards completion to #deliver it to you fiends.
Guest Check-In: we have a lot more coming in the next few months as the course nears completion, but If you haven’t already, go listen to Our Episode with Mike Nuzzo who is working on @cabotcitrusfarms. Walker is doing a lot of photo and video of the joint and it’s gonna be cool. Really cool.
This Week’s Schedule:
Monday: MBM 108-Template Talk. Over/under/properly rated templated holes
Wednesday: WS on the long form
Thursday: Interview. Guest Tee Bee Dee
If you made it all the way here, ask yourself why.
Cheers,
HS
